They take gingerbread very seriously, and so do we. We also consulted with two gingerbread experts to inform our testing process and recommendations: John Cook, Executive Pastry Chef at The Omni Grove Park Inn and a judge of the National Gingerbread House Competition, and Melissa Redell, owner of The Solvang Bakery in Solvang, California.

We discovered how important icing consistency is and that having mint or sour candies in a kit cuts the sweetness of the gumdrops. This season, we were able to try out some gingerbread house-building kits ourselves, leaving our floors covered in sprinkles and our hands coated with icing. Gingerbread isn't only for bakers - there are plenty of gingerbread house kits that give you all the decorating fun with none of the baking fuss.

Kids and adults love to eat the candy and sneak an extra cookie while spending time in the kitchen together. Building a gingerbread house is part of many families' holiday traditions.
